MANCHESTER: Chris Pateman, managing director of the Builders Merchants Federation and former editor of Builders' Merchants Journal, has called on government to stimulate construction activity.

Addressing the audience at Greenbuild Expo he demanded government cut VAT on home improvement and adopt measures to allow local authorities to build more social homes.

Patemen said: "The time has come for bricklayers, plumbers, electricians, carpenters, roofers, and merchants to stand side by side and put building at the heart of the government's recovery agenda."

"Together we can make a difference. We need to persuade government to cut vat on home improvement to 5%, build more social homes, and improve the existing housing stock," he said.
