MANCHESTER: The Greenbuild Expo 2010 was the backdrop for the BMF Young Merchants meeting, where Alex Best of WPL stepped down from her post as chairman, and Joe Tipper of Tippers Builders' Merchants took up the mantle.
The morning was hosted by Knauf Insulation where managing director John Sinfield took the group on a tour of the St Helen's facility, where glass in one form or another, has been made for over 200years.
The afternoon was spent at Greenbuild with speaker Allwyn Jones of the Local Authority Building Council. Mr Jones spoke of several issues that merchants may want to be aware of, such as the need to ensure that alternative products to those specified must meet the exact same specifications or better.
Anything less may result in a recalculation of Code Level and the attendant issues and Mr Jones was keen to point out that the Code Levels are only the bare minimum standards, and cannot even be called good.
The Greenbuild Expo itself had a busy first day with many organisations and associations visiting as well as specifiers and architects. Footfall was much reduced on the second day, but still of a level that exhibitors were satisfied with given the volume of day one. Overall, it seems that the show, now in its second year could be a viable success.
