MKM Anlaby boosts DIY SOS build for Hull family
Published:  01 May, 2018

MKM’s branch in Anlaby is to feature on the BBC’s DIY SOS programme after donating to a project to help a local family.

The featured project in the long-running show focuses on Darren and his family’s home in Hessle, Hull. After becoming paralysed from the waist down through a devastating spinal cord injury, Darren has had trouble caring for his adopted son Oliver, who also uses a wheelchair. Darren lost his wife on Boxing Day and is now the single main carer for Oliver and his two other sons.

This demanded a number of adaptations to their home.

Thanks to the work of a team of volunteers, Darren’s home has been transformed. Changes include a first floor side extension and through-floor lift, allowing him to care for his sons. Materials donated by MKM’s Anlaby branch include bricks, cement, plaster, lintels, sand, gravel, plywood and timber.

The programme featuring the project will air within the next 12 months.

Ian Pratt, Branch Director at MKM Anlaby, said: “We’re delighted to have been involved in such an amazing project. This was an inspiring process which brought everyone together and showed the local Hull community at its very best.

“With so many people kindly donating their own time and supplies, it goes to show just how proud a community we are. We hope the family can now enjoy their home with the range of adaptations that have been made.”
