MONTERREY: Cement maker CEMEX has responded to the Haitian earthquake victims' appeal by collaborating in relief efforts with the governments of Mexico and other countries, international institutions, and social organisations.
CEMEX has 115 employees in Haiti, working at three maritime terminals and a commercial representation office. A rapid response effort to provide humanitarian aid to employees, their families, and neighbouring communities has been launched. To this end, the first delivery of basic goods has been completed, and a second one is under way.
The company has also set up a fund to receive voluntary contributions from its personnel worldwide.
CEMEX said that it will match every donation received two-for-one, and contribute the total amount to a relief programme.
The company is also making its heavy machinery in Haiti available to assist relief teams with their efforts.
With three cement import terminals, two of which are located in the Port-au-Prince area, and one of them in the northern town of Cape Haitian, CEMEX is one of the major cement suppliers in the beleaguered country.
One of the terminals remains operational, and with the help of CEMEX in the Dominican Republic and its other operations in the Americas Region, CEMEX will be able to maintain supply of cement into Haiti and as contribute to meeting the country's requirements.
