As builders merchants who stock timber the fireworks season can increase the risk of fires starting. You should take reasonable steps to minimise the potential of a fire starting at your branch by doing the following.

1. Make sure housekeeping in the yard is in good condition i.e. timber neatly sacked, paper/cardboard, sticks and other rubbish are removed and placed within a skip.

2. Make sure that empty pallets are removed from the site where possible; if this is not possible please consider storing them where they are least likely to be hit by a firework. Burning pallets are one of the most frequent sources of fires during the fireworks season.

3. All skips are closed or covered up overnight, where conventional skips are being used. Making sure that sufficient skips are available to avoid cardboard and other combustibles being stacked up near skips.

4. Carry out an inspection each morning after fireworks to ensure there are no small smouldering fires/embers.

Please remember that if your branch is in a residential area or near a known firework display the chance of a fire is increased.
