Rod Stewart has been persuaded to perform at Hull’s KC Stadium by MKM executive chairman David Kilburn, a concert that will coincide with the company’s 21st anniversary next year.

Mr Kilburn, executive chairman of MKM, says he is a life-long fan of the artist, and the concert was his way of saying thanks to the people of Hull.

He founded MKM Building Supplies with business partner Peter Murray in 1995, when the company employed just five people. Today MKM, which is headquartered in Hull, employs more than 1,000 people with 42 branches across the UK, and has a turnover of £250m.

MKM will pay for the concert, to take place at the KC Stadium on 14 June, 2016.

Mr Kilburn said: “Hull has been fantastic to us, very supportive. The city has given us many great people as both customers and employees and it’s hard to imagine MKM being where it is today having started somewhere else. Staging this concert is our way of saying thanks.

“I am so excited we have finally got Rod Stewart coming to Hull. Rod is one of my favourite performers and it is far too long since we have seen an act like this in the city. I have every faith this event will create lots of enjoyment for many thousands of people and I cannot wait.”

To ensure as many people as possible benefit from the concert, MKM will be donating all profits from the concert to two Hull charities – the Daisy Appeal, a local medical charity that helps patients with cancer, heart disease, and dementia, and Holy Trinity Church, which is raising £4m for a restoration project.

Mr Kilburn says he set about looking at the possibility of bringing Rod Stewart to Hull when he saw him perform at the opening of The Commonwealth Games in Glasgow 2014.

Entertainment agents Blackburn International secured the date on Mr Kilburn’s behalf. The company is now collaborating with music promoters Cuffe & Taylor, who are managing Rod Stewart’s Hits Tour across the UK next year.

“I’ve always loved Rod’s music and I knew when I saw him in Glasgow that I would do whatever it took to bring him to Hull,” Mr Kilburn said.

“I am thrilled we are now in a position to announce that this is happening and I hope everyone gets behind this fantastic event to not only see Rod but to ensure it raises lots of cash for The Daisy Appeal and Holy Trinity Church.”
