Construction still falling

Published:  03 July, 2009

LONDON: Latest figures from the Chartered Institute of Purchasing & Supply show the UK construction sector has continued to contract.

David Noble, chief executive at the institute said: "With conditions worsening, particularly in the housing and commercial sub-sectors, competition between firms remained fierce and many were forced to cull jobs again."

He said the sector is in better shape than at the start of the year despite June data signalling a marginal worsening in the rate of reduction versus May. UK constructors maintained the sharp improvement in confidence over future business prospects that they registered in May. This was due to greater confidence in the economic recovery.
